Do you love adding beautiful bouquets to your home? Did you know you can have beautiful bouquets in the shower too? I hadn’t thought of this either, but once I heard about hanging herbs in the shower – I was hooked! What better way to enhance your bathroom environment than with essential oils straight from the plant.
These herbal shower bundles release their essential oils from the high humidity created by the shower steam. Some of the plant’s scent provides relaxation and eases muscle pain, while others help to wake you up, or clear nasal congestion and help sore throats.
Before we dive in to hanging herbs in your next hot shower – I want to put out a little disclaimer. Just because something is “all natural” such as a plant, doesn’t mean it is a good choice for you. Know yourself and make sure you are comfortable with each plant before adding them to your herbal shower bouquets.
I had a co-worker at a natural handmade soap company. She was very sensitive to lavender. It gave her migraines, so she would work in another area if lavender was being used. Lavender is soothing for most people, but not for her. This is why it is important to know what works for you. And, if in doubt, do a little test or consult a professional before using any plants.
Why do People Hang Herbs in their Shower?
People hang herbs in their shower so they can benefit from a plant’s essential oil and enjoy some shower aromatherapy. Plus it can really add to your bathroom decor and create a luxury spa experience. What is not to love about that?
Hanging herbs in your shower is a cheap and easy way to add a natural element to your shower. It is a way to create a spa-like environment for some added self-care during your daily shower routine. You are also able to choose the herbs to hang in your shower depending on which feeling you are going for. Are you looking for relaxation and a good sleep, or maybe to feel fresh and energized in the morning? Or perhaps you have a cold and are looking to clear your stuffy nose.
People have been using the benefits of plants and aromatherapy for centuries. This is a great way to do this at home for a lot less than you would pay to go to a spa. Using fresh herbs is also a lot cheaper than buying essential oil in bottles.
Where to Get Ingredients for Herbal Shower Bouquets?
You can get ingredients for your herbal shower bouquet either by growing them yourself, going to your local farmers market, a grocery store, or a local florist. By using locally grown material to put together an herbal shower bundle it will create a more seasonal experience. It gives you something to look forward to. For example, waiting for that fresh lavender in the summer, or using some evergreens in the winter. Also when sourcing locally grown ingredients that are in season, they will be at their freshest, they will last longer, and the aromatherapy will be at its most powerful.
I like to live in harmony with nature, and be very intentional with the seasons. This is a great way to continue that. It will be your very own seasonal spa created naturally with fresh ingredients.
How to Make an Herbal Shower Bouquet
- Select 5 – 10 herb stems that are about 30 cm long
- Remove all the leaves from the lower 1/4 of the stem
- Design as a front facing bouquet:
- Lay your base stems out on the table in a fan shape
- Put the largest, nicest focal pieces closer to the top
- Secure stems together where you removed the leaves using either floral wire, or a rubber band
- Add some natural twine or ribbon over top of where you secured stems and tie tightly while forming a loop at the top to be able to hang in the shower
- Give your herb stems a final little trim to even out the ends
- Shower herb bundles can be hung over shower heads, secured on shower curtain rods, or over the shower door
- If giving as a gift you can place in a mason jar with some water, or wrap in craft paper
- Hang your herbs in the shower and enjoy for up to 3-4 weeks

Once you have given these a try, you can have some fun and come up with some of your own creations.
What to do With Your Herbs Afterwards
Once your herbal shower bundle has finished you can either add it to the compost, or put it in an empty vase and enjoy further as a dried bouquet.
You will know it is done when the scent has gone and it has dried out. The herbs will actually dry quite nicely in this way.
Once this happens, it is a good idea to deal with them right away. If you leave a dried bundle of herbs in your shower for too long it will start to mould. Nobody wants that – ew.
When hanging herbs in the shower, they will last about 3-4 weeks give or take. It really depends on which herbs or plant materials you have decided to include. Some plants stand up better to the steam over time than others.
You can try to extend the life of your bundle by trimming off the ends of the stems slightly and placing them in cool water when not in use. I have also heard of people using floral watering tubes, but I have not tried this, as I like a more natural look. You can try to extend the scent by crushing some of the leaves or hitting them lightly against the shower wall.
Another thing to consider is that you do not want your herbal shower bundle getting too wet or directly splashed with water each time. You may be better off hanging your herbs on your curtain rod away from the shower head or over the door of your shower.
